Tai chi is a gentle, non-competitive martial art form that originated in China. People practice Tai Chi for any number of reasons: To improve posture, flexibility, and strength; to manage stress and improve mood; to generally improve health and mood; and to practice with other individuals who happen to be on a similar path. Everyone practices for different reasons, and so we tailor each class to suit those who attend.
Class attendees are a wide variety of ages and experience. There’s no experience needed to join the class. Each student has unique goals and challenges, so I work closely with everyone to make sure they’re getting what they need from Tai Chi.
We have a fun mix of people from all walks of life; we have been intentional about building a sense of community, and the heart of our group is full of positive energy and good intentions.
In terms of learning Tai Chi, we start with basic movements—how to step, shift weight, and breathe. This is done in “sections” (sometimes referred to as “forms”). The first section will be the easiest, providing the foundation for everything else to come. Once the first section is comfortably memorized and practiced, you then move on to the second section.
As you progress, you’ll move on to more complex sections, but the key is to take things at your own pace. Over time, you’ll work on balance, smoothness, breathing, and power. Tai Chi is a lifelong practice, and there’s always room to grow.
That said, the focus isn’t on mastering the full form immediately, but on enjoying the journey and getting out of it what you put in.
We ask for a $10 donation per class; if you attend more than one class a week, there’s no charge for the second class. Our goal is to keep classes affordable for everyone.
We always appreciate it when new people reach out before the class so we can be sure to welcome them and answer any questions. But you can simply show up as well.
You can wear any comfortable athletic clothes. While I prefer practicing barefoot to feel the ground better, regular athletic shoes are fine too.
